HAVE A WATER WISE YARD

  1. Choose drought-tolerant plants: When selecting plants for your yard, choose species that are well-adapted to the climate of Spreckels. These plants will require less water and will be more resilient during periods of drought.
  2. Water wisely: Be mindful of how much water you are using when watering your plants. Water deeply and infrequently, rather than shallowly and often, to encourage deep root growth. Water in the early morning or late evening to reduce evaporation.
  3. Mulch: Adding a layer of mulch around your plants can help to reduce water loss from the soil. Mulch helps to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weed growth.
  4. Maintain your irrigation system: Make sure that your irrigation system is working efficiently. Check for leaks and adjust sprinkler heads to ensure that water is being directed where it is needed.
  5. Reduce lawn area: Lawns can be water-intensive, so consider reducing the size of your lawn or replacing it with drought-tolerant groundcovers or hardscaping.

Remember, a beautiful yard doesn’t have to be water intensive. By implementing these strategies, you can create a stunning landscape that conserves water and supports local ecosystems.
